Uppdaterat whitepaper: Information inför val av hypervisor för stora virtuella maskiner... (VMware, Hyper-V, XenServer)

I Juni 2011 skrev jag ett kort whitepaper som sammanfattar vilka maxvärden som finns i de tre stora Hypervisorna (VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V och Citrix XenServer).

En länk till senaste versionen av detta dokument ligger i denna bloggpost och framöver kommer denna bloggpost att uppdateras så att den alltid pekar på den senaste versionen.
I slutet av denna post finns en changelogg som i stora drag beskriver skillnaderna mellan de olika versionerna.

Kommentarer kring dokumentet

Feedback jag fått kring version 1.0 av dokumentet var bland annat att det var helt bortkastad tid att läsa eftersom det inte fanns någon information kring vilken hypervisor som är bäst, att det saknas information om hur man skall sätta upp miljöerna och kostnader kring produkterna.

Här vill jag betona att målet med dokumentet inte är att vara en instruktion för hur man sätter upp vSphere, Hyper-V eller XenServer. Det är inte heller tänkt att användas som en guide för hur man skall välja hypervisor.

Tanken med dokumentet är att ha en sammanställning på en mycket övergripande nivå över max-nivåer i de olika leverantörernas lösningar. Det var också tanken att ha en sammanställning över vart informationen går att hitta (därav länksamligen i slutet av dokumentet).

Att skriva en sammanfattning över vilken produkt som är bäst ur ett management-, utrullnings-, drift- och/eller pris-perspektiv är så otroligt olika beroende på hur lösningen sätts upp och vilka licensavtal som varje företag har att det är nästan omöjligt att göra på ett koncist sätt (dokumentet kommer i så fall att bli otroligt långt med en massa "om", "men" och "kanske" för att täcka upp de olika eventualiteterna).

Målet med dokumentet är istället att väcka tanken kring olika hypervisors för att man som läsare sedan skall kunna söka mer information. Inte att komma med den kompletta lösningen. :)

Det är därför själva sammanställningen är på bara två sidor. :)

In June 2011 I wrote a short Whitepaper that sumarized the maximum values found in the three major Hypervisors (VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V and Citrix XenServer)

A link to the latest version of the document is placed in this blogpost and this post will be updated in the future when new versions are released. What I'm saying is that this blogpost is the correct blogpost to link to if you want to be sure that you always are getting the latest version. :)

Comments to the document:

Feedback I received on version 1.0 of the document was that it was a complete waste of time to read because there was no information about which hypervisor is best, the lack of information on how to set up environments and expenses relating to the products.

Here I would emphasize that the aim of the document is not to be a guide on how to set up vSphere, Hyper-V or XenServer. It is not intended as a guide for how to choose their hypervisor.

The idea of this paper is to have a summary of a very general level of maximum levels in the different vendors' solutions. It was also thought to have a summary of where the information can be found (hence the link brought together in the end of this document).

Writing a summary of what product is best from a management, deployment, operation and / or pricing perspective is so incredibly different depending on how the solution is set up and the license agreement that each company has it's almost impossible to do in a concise form (the document will then become incredibly long, well with a lot of "if", "buts" and "maybe" to cover the various contingencies).

The goal of this paper is instead to bring the idea about the different hypervisors to the reader, and then help the reader to seek more information. Not to bring the full solution. :)

That is why the actual compilation is only two pages. :)
